My father was a math teacher for 35 years; he knew how people learned and how students acted in class. He had, and has, the special ability to help people because he took people as they were and saw how they learned--he could adapt.
Still, he could be frustrated with students. When they were not trying he would say:
"In your ears, and out your rears!"
